How to Host a Successful and Fun Poker Party

Article written by Alexandra Davis

Hosting a poker party is a great way to spend a fun evening with friends. Here’s some information to help you host a successful and enjoyable poker party.

First, decide on the guest list, since this will determine how to set up for the game. If the number of guests is under 10, you can use a single large table, if you have one. Otherwise, divide the group among 2 smaller tables. A good strategy is to scatter some small side tables within reach of players at the main table and stock them with snacks and drinks.

Familiarize yourself with the rules for poker games. For example, be sure you have a good understanding of poker hand ranking. It won’t hurt to do a quick review of poker instructions and poker probabilities. Here’s where the Internet comes in handy. Be sure to visit a few poker sites to see what games are most popular, in case you want to change up the game. Although Texas hold ‘em poker is very trendy, consider playing other versions of poker for variety.

Make sure you have a poker chip set. Experts recommend a quantity of 50 to 100 chips per player. Whether you choose inexpensive plastic chips, traditional clay poker chips or trendy custom poker chips, the group needs to decide on denominations for the various chip colors. Depending on the skill level of players in the group, you may want to adjust your chip values accordingly or set the chip values lower. Many poker games can run successfully with only one denomination. Always use brand-new decks of poker cards and have and extra deck for each table.

Set up the game so that those who are out early will have something to do while waiting for a new game to start. A nearby comfortable seating area with a TV is a good idea. Another idea is to set up a “loser’s table” where the early outs can play until the game(s) at the main table(s) end. Since games can last up to an hour, you really need to make provision for these players, so they don’t get bored. Poker requires a lot of concentration, so keep noise and distraction to a minimum. Quiet background music is OK, but choose it carefully. Loud or intrusive music also will affect the interaction of players at the table. Since this interaction is integral to each player’s strategy, keep the music down.

A poker party is a great way to spend an afternoon or evening. If thoughtfully organized and set up, this type of party is one you’ll either want to host or attend on a regular basis.
