Aggression: What Ever World Class Poker Player Needs

Look at any of the top poker players in the world and they all have one common trait at the table - Aggression . There are certainly different styles of play by pros whether it is small ball or raising big preflop, but they all employ aggressiveness at some point in their game. All good poker players hope to be seated at a table of passive (non-aggressive) players as these are their bread and butter. Establishing different table images allows you to do various things. With an aggressive table image, your opponents will call you down more putting you on a bluff. This allows you to get paid off on your big hands. Oppositely, if you are playing very tight, you won’t get paid off on your big hands because players will fold knowing you have the goods but you can pull off some bluffs.

Being passive, will allow others to run over you. The tight passive player is an easy read. They bet when they have a hand, and check when they don’t. An aggressive player can then easily bet big against the tight passive player and they will fold almost all the time. The loose passive player (calling station) will pay you off as long as you have the goods and when you don’t, you will be getting free cards most of the time. Bluffs won’t work against these types as they will constantly call; however, the money is in making value bets when you have the goods and getting paid by these types. Passive obviously does not work.

Aggression is not just bluffing your way through, it is timing. With a strong hand that will win on its own merits requires no aggression. Instead, you need to bet smaller in hopes of being paid off. Also, a smaller bet can still look like an aggressive player trying to steal the pot and result in a reraise. Aggression is best applied with semi-bluffs – betting when you have numerous outs that can still make you the winner. For example, you have A♠ Q♠ and the flop is J♠ 8♥ 2♠. You have not hit the flop but you have the nut flush draw and two over cards. Betting the pot here is a good play as you will often win the pot right here and players with hands like A♥ 8♦ may even lay them down putting you on top pair.

Aggression does have it downfalls though. Using the same example above, your opponent could have easily spiked a set of 2’s and although you still have a lot of outs, you could lose a lot of chips. The best aggressive players can also read their opponents so that they can avoid a trap for all their chips. Aggression is one part of a poker pro but it is the one part that all pro’s have.
